WTI rose 4.3% for the week, with U.S. markets closed Friday for Christmas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>February Brent crude&nbsp;<\/strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/investing\/future\/BRNG22?countryCode=UK&amp;mod=MW_story_quote\" target=\"_blank\">BRNG22,&nbsp;0.13%<\/a>,&nbsp;the global benchmark, rose<span style=\"color:#52a505\" class=\"has-inline-color\"> <strong>$1.56<\/strong><\/span>, or 2.1%, to finish at<span style=\"color:#34a300\" class=\"has-inline-color\"> <strong>$76.85<\/strong><\/span> a barrel on ICE Futures Europe, the highest close since Nov. 25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Encouraging data regarding the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccine boosters against the omicron variant of the coronavirus were helping to underpin oil, analysts said, as well as studies indicating the strain was relatively less severe than the delta variant, though more infectious. Crude found support the previous session after a larger-than-expected drawdown in U.S. crude inventories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crude prices stabilized after a raft \u201cof mostly positive COVID vaccine\/treatment headlines in the fight against omicron,\u201d said Edward Moya, senior analyst at Oanda, in a note.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt seems all the major catalysts that await oil in the New Year lean towards higher prices,\u201d he said. \u201cThis week, supply disruptions from Libya and Nigeria and a bullish EIA report have WTI crude trading comfortably above the $70 level. The U.S. is a net exporter again, diesel demand roared back, and stockpiles are dropping.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crude maintained gains after oilfield services firm Baker Hughes said the number of U.S. oil rigs rose by 5 to 480 this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gasoline futures rose after&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/fire-at-exxonmobil-baytown-refinery-injures-4-sends-gasoline-futures-higher-11640275668?mod=article_inline\">a fire at ExxonMobil Corp.\u2019s&nbsp;<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/investing\/stock\/XOM?mod=MW_story_quote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">XOM,&nbsp;+0.05%<\/a>&nbsp;Baytown, Texas, refinery \u2014 the nation\u2019s fourth largest. The company said the blaze was extinguished. The fire left four individuals injured, the company said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>January gasoline futures<\/strong>&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/oil-edges-higher-after-ending-at-nearly-1-month-high-11640265678#phrase-company?ref=COMPANY%7CRBF22;onlineSignificance=passing-mention\" target=\"_blank\">RBF22<\/a>&nbsp;rose 1.8% to close at <span style=\"color:#5ca300\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>$2.2061<\/strong><\/span> a gallon, after trading as high as $2.21, its highest intraday level since Nov. 26. January <strong>heating oil&nbsp;<\/strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/investing\/future\/HOF22?mod=MW_story_quote\" target=\"_blank\">HOF22,&nbsp;-1.30%<\/a>&nbsp;settled at<span style=\"color:#4aa300\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong> $2.3314<\/strong><\/span>, up 1%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In news that suggested the impact of the omicron variant may not affect energy demand as much as feared, a University of Oxford study found a third dose of AstraZeneca\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/investing\/stock\/AZN?mod=MW_story_quote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AZN,&nbsp;-0.76%<\/a>&nbsp;vaccine was effective against omicron. Also, Novavax&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/investing\/stock\/NVAX?mod=MW_story_quote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NVAX,&nbsp;-3.30%<\/a>&nbsp;said early data showed its COVID-19 vaccine produces an immune response. On Wednesday, the Food and Drug Administration authorized Pfizer Inc.\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/investing\/stock\/PFE?mod=MW_story_quote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PFE,&nbsp;-1.41%<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/fda-authorizes-pfizers-covid-19-antiviral-for-high-risk-teens-and-adults-2021-12-22?mod=article_inline\">COVID-19 antiviral pill<\/a>, adding to the arsenal that can be used to fight the disease, and on Thursday the agency&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/fda-adds-merck-antiviral-to-covid-19-tool-kit-for-high-risk-adults-above-18-amid-flurry-of-positive-news-on-boosters-11640274628?mod=mw_quote_news&amp;mod=article_inline\">authorized Merck &amp; Co. Inc.\u2019s&nbsp;<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/investing\/stock\/MRK?mod=MW_story_quote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MRK,&nbsp;-0.56%<\/a>&nbsp;antiviral pill for adults who have tested positive for the virus and are at high risk of disease progression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Natural-gas futures&nbsp;<\/strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/investing\/future\/NGF22?mod=MW_story_quote\" target=\"_blank\">NGF22,&nbsp;1.55%<\/a>&nbsp;fell 6.2% to close <span style=\"color:#f40519\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>$3.7310<\/strong><\/span> per million British thermal units on Nymex, leaving the U.S. contract with a 1.1% weekly gain.
