However, \u201cit already appears that some of the supply and production disruptions are being sorted out, so that could result in a \u2018sell the news\u2019 reaction from markets in the sessions ahead, pending any new developments.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oil supply took a hit last week on the back of protests in Kazakhstan, while Libya has seen declines in oil output due to pipeline maintenance, weeks after militias first shut down major oil fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Around 300,000 barrels per day of oil production remained shut in as a blockage at Libya\u2019s key western oil fields remained in place,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/platts\/en\/market-insights\/latest-news\/oil\/011022-libyan-oil-output-recovers-to-around-900000-bd-western-blockade-still-in-place\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sources told S&amp;P Global Platts<\/a>&nbsp;on Monday, but the country\u2019s output has recovered to around 900,000 barrels per day after pipeline maintenance at the eastern Waha oil fields was completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Near term, Richey at Sevens Report Research said he expects U.S. benchmark oil prices to see some consolidation back toward $75 a barrel \u201cas recent gains are digested,\u201d however a deeper correction is \u201cpossible if the fundamental outlook continues to deteriorate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>West Texas Intermediate crude<\/strong> for February delivery\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/investing\/future\/CL00?mod=MW_story_quote\" target=\"_blank\">CL00,\u00a00.52%<\/a>\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/investing\/future\/CLG22?mod=MW_story_quote\" target=\"_blank\">CLG22,\u00a00.54%<\/a>\u00a0fell<span style=\"color:#e91655\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong> 67 cents<\/strong><\/span>, or nearly 0.9%, to settle at <span style=\"color:#e91655\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>$78.23 <\/strong><\/span>a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, after posting a loss on Friday. <strong>March Brent crude\u00a0<\/strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/investing\/future\/BRN00?countryCode=UK&amp;mod=MW_story_quote\" target=\"_blank\">BRN00,\u00a0+0.16%<\/a>\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/investing\/future\/BRNH22?countryCode=UK&amp;mod=MW_story_quote\" target=\"_blank\">BRNH22,\u00a0+0.16%<\/a>,\u00a0the global benchmark, declined by <span style=\"color:#e91655\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>88 cents<\/strong><\/span>, or 1.1%, at <strong><span style=\"color:#e91655\" class=\"has-inline-color\">$80.87 <\/span><\/strong>a barrel on ICE Futures Europe. Last week, WTI, the U.S. benchmark, rose 4.9%, while Brent advanced more than 5%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Worries about COVID\u2019s impact on demand continued to pressure oil. Chinese authorities in the northern coastal city of Tianjin, after the detection of two cases of COVID-19 caused by the omicron variant of the coronavirus,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/omicron-comes-to-china-prompting-mass-testing-and-quarantines-11641736166?mod=article_inline&amp;mod=article_inline\">ordered the testing of millions of people<\/a>&nbsp;weeks ahead of the start of the Winter Olympics in nearby Beijing. China has been sticking to a \u201czero-COVID policy\u201d entailing strict lockdowns and mass testing in response to outbreaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Read:<\/strong>&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/no-zero-covid-tops-list-of-2022-geopolitical-risks-eurasia-group-11641228457?mod=article_inline\">Failed China \u2018zero-COVID\u2019 policy tops list of 2022 geopolitical risks: Eurasia Group<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhile we see other countries adapting to live with COVID, China clearly continues to pursue its zero-COVID policy,\u201d said Warren Patterson, head of commodities strategy at ING, in a note. \u201cThis is a risk to oil demand since China is the largest crude oil importer in the world. We are also approaching Chinese New Year, a time when there is normally plenty of domestic travel, and so any domestic restrictions will weigh on oil consumption.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But supply concerns may remain a bigger factor, he said, given unrest in Kazakhstan and output outages in Libya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chevron said the Tengizchevroil consortium it leads is gradually restoring production at Kazakhstan\u2019s Tengiz oil field after civil unrest led to a reduction in output by an unspecified amount last week,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.argusmedia.com\/en\/news\/2290105-output-at-kazakh-tengiz-oil-field-ramping-back-up?backToResults=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to news reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The country produces about 2.1% of global oil production and any impact to output could be short lived, said Rohan Reddy, analyst at global exchange-traded funds provider Global X. Even if there is a prolonged impact, other countries like the U.S., could \u201cstep in to fill the void left by lost Kazakh production.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, U.S. and Russian negotiators held talks in Geneva Monday amid Moscow\u2019s military buildup near Ukraine, but Deputy U.S. Secretary of State Wendy Sherman referred to the event as a \u201cdiscussion,\u201d and \u201cnot what you call a negotiation,\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/u-s-russia-talks-begin-to-avert-one-of-the-biggest-geopolitical-crises-since-the-cold-war-11641815752?mod=e2tw&amp;mod=article_inline\">&nbsp;according to the The Wall Street Journal<\/a>.
