Despite omicron\u2019s spread, \u201cglobal oil demand remains robust among all modes of transportation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>West Texas Intermediate crude<\/strong> for February delivery\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/investing\/future\/CL00?mod=MW_story_quote\" target=\"_blank\">CL00,\u00a03.96%<\/a>\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/investing\/future\/CLG22?mod=MW_story_quote\" target=\"_blank\">CLG22,\u00a03.96%<\/a>\u00a0rose <strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-7-color\">$2.99<\/span><\/strong>, or 3.8%, to settle  at<strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-6-color\"> <\/span><span class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-7-color\">$81.22<\/span><\/strong> a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. That was the highest front-month contract prices finish since Nov. 11, according to Dow Jones Market Data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>March Brent crude\u00a0<\/strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/investing\/future\/BRN00?countryCode=UK&amp;mod=MW_story_quote\" target=\"_blank\">BRN00,\u00a0-0.12%<\/a>\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/investing\/future\/BRNH22?countryCode=UK&amp;mod=MW_story_quote\" target=\"_blank\">BRNH22,\u00a0-0.12%<\/a>,\u00a0the global benchmark, rose<span class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-7-color\"> <strong>$2.85<\/strong><\/span>, or 3.5%, to <span class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-7-color\"><strong>$83.72<\/strong> <\/span>a barrel on ICE Futures Europe \u2014 the highest settlement since Nov. 9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both WTI and Brent have rallied nearly 8% so far in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the petroleum products, <strong>February gasoline\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/investing\/future\/RBG22?mod=MW_story_quote\" target=\"_blank\">RBG22<\/a><\/strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/investing\/future\/RBG22?mod=MW_story_quote\" target=\"_blank\">,\u00a03.15%<\/a>\u00a0rose 3.6% to <strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-7-color\">$2.357<\/span> <\/strong>a gallon and <strong>February heating oil\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/investing\/future\/HOG22?mod=MW_story_quote\" target=\"_blank\">HOG22<\/a><\/strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/investing\/future\/HOG22?mod=MW_story_quote\" target=\"_blank\">,\u00a03.17%<\/a>\u00a0added 3.1% to <strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-7-color\">$2.564<\/span><\/strong> a gallon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tuesday\u2019s gains came despite reports that production in Libya had recovered and that activity at Kazakhstan\u2019s Tengiz oil field had returned to normal. Worries about hits to production in the two countries had helped to lift crude last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oil production in Libya has returned to 1 million barrels a day after militias lifted a three-week blockade of oil fields, including the nation\u2019s largest,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-01-10\/libya-s-biggest-oil-field-resumes-output-after-three-week-outage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bloomberg reported<\/a>. Chevron Corp.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/investing\/stock\/CVX?mod=MW_story_quote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CVX,&nbsp;+2.29%<\/a>,&nbsp;which leads the Tengizchevroil consortium, said production at Kazakhstan\u2019s 600,000-barrel-a-day Tengiz oil field has returned to normal after being disrupted by unrest last week,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.argusmedia.com\/en\/news\/2290484-kazakh-tengiz-oil-field-operating-at-normal-rates?backToResults=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to Argus<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While exports from Libya\u2019s western oil ports are likely to begin again soon, exports \u201cfrom most of Libya\u2019s other oil ports have been suspended due to bad weather this week, meaning that the higher oil production in the country has not yet translated directly into an increase in available oil supply,\u201d said Carsten Fritsch, commodity analyst at Commerzbank, in a note. \u201cThis may explain why oil prices have not responded as yet to the reopening of the Libyan oil fields.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traders are also closely watching tensions within Kazakhstan but there has not been any meaningful impact to oil production, said Velandera Energy\u2019s Raj.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTraders are factoring in a low likelihood of widespread production disruptions,\u201d he said. \u201cSince Kazakhstan has consistently exceeded its OPEC+ quota, a small disruption will only bring it back to compliance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">OPEC+, comprised of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies, saw production quota compliance rise to 116.5% in December, but the 19 members subject to the output targets pumped some 620,000 barrels per day below their combined caps, according to an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/platts\/en\/market-insights\/latest-news\/oil\/011122-opec-hikes-december-oil-output-but-falls-well-short-of-quotas-again-platts-survey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">S&amp;P Global Platts survey<\/a>&nbsp;released Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report on the survey results said Platts Analytics still expects the market to be oversupplied in the first three months of the year, but estimates OPEC+ sustainable spare production capacity will shrink to 800,000 b\/d by June if it maintains its monthly quota rises, creating \u201can uncomfortably thin market buffer in the second half of the year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, the Energy Information Administration expects&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/eia-expects-us-oil-production-to-reach-a-record-in-2023-2022-01-11?mod=mw_latestnews&amp;tesla=y&amp;mod=article_inline\">annual U.S. production to reach a record next year<\/a>. In a monthly report Tuesday, the government agency sees output rising to 12.4 million barrels per day in 2023, the highest annual average on record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, tensions between Russia and Ukraine effect \u201cnatural-gas volatility, but not so much oil prices, as Ukraine is the main channel to transport Russian gas to Western Europe,\u201d Raj said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Nymex,<strong> February natural gas<\/strong>\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/investing\/future\/NGG22?mod=MW_story_quote\" target=\"_blank\">NGG22,\u00a03.41%<\/a>\u00a0settled at <span class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-7-color\"><strong>$4.249 <\/strong><\/span>per million British thermal units, up 4.2%, after climbing by roughly that same amount on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Weekly data on U.S. petroleum supplies from the EIA will be released on Wednesday. On average, analysts polled by S&amp;P Global Platts forecast a decline of 1.6 million barrels in U.S. crude supplies for the week ended Jan. 7.
