Part\u00edculas (CERN) de Ginebra (Suiza) producir\u00e1 a partir de ma\u00f1ana colisiones de protones a una energ\u00eda jam\u00e1s alcanzada, lo que le permitir\u00e1 recrear con mayor facilidad las condiciones que hab\u00eda en los primeros microsegundos despu\u00e9s del Big Bang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">El objetivo ser\u00e1 responder a grandes interrogantes que persisten sobre el funcionamiento de la naturaleza y de la vida, y ver lo que ninguna tecnolog\u00eda ha permitido hasta ahora: el inicio del universo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Durante casi cuatro a\u00f1os el LHC funcionar\u00e1 a una energ\u00eda de colisi\u00f3n r\u00e9cord de 13,6 billones de electronvoltios (TeV), simulando pr\u00e1cticamente la densidad que hab\u00eda al instante mismo del inicio del universo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ninguna tecnolog\u00eda es capaz de ver lo que ocurri\u00f3 en ese momento, no porque hayan pasado 13.800 millones de a\u00f1os desde aquello, sino porque durante los primeros 300.000 a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s del Big Bang no hab\u00eda luz en el universo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBueno, no es que no hubiese luz, pero es que estaba tan caliente que la materia absorb\u00eda la luz, con lo cual todo era totalmente negro, no hab\u00eda luz libre\u201d, explica a Efe el investigador del Instituto de F\u00edsica de Cantabria y experto en altas energ\u00edas, Celso Mart\u00ednez, quien tambi\u00e9n es el representante en Espa\u00f1a del experimento del CMS, uno de los detectores del LHC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Esa es la raz\u00f3n por la cual no se puede contar con el desarrollo de telescopios m\u00e1s potentes para ver lo que pas\u00f3 en ese entonces, incluso si ya existen algunos que se han instalado en misiones espaciales y potencialmente podr\u00edan tener ese alcance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLa \u00fanica forma es recreando las condiciones (del Big Bang) en la Tierra, con aceleradores que generen la densidad de energ\u00eda que hab\u00eda en ese momento y ver qu\u00e9 es lo que sale\u201d, dice Mart\u00ednez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Esto equivale exactamente a ver el pasado del universo, como ocurre de forma m\u00e1s habitual cuando percibimos por la noche una estrella que ya ha muerto, pero cuya luz sigue viajando por el cosmos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">EL BOSON DE HIGGS<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">El LHC alcanzar\u00e1 su potencia m\u00e1xima justo al d\u00eda siguiente del d\u00e9cimo aniversario del descubrimiento del Boson de Higgs, que el 4 de julio de 2012 represent\u00f3 un hito en la historia de la ciencia y vali\u00f3 a sus te\u00f3ricos -el brit\u00e1nico Peters Higgs y el belga Fran\u00e7ois Englert- el premio Nobel de F\u00edsica al a\u00f1o siguiente.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La energ\u00eda que alcanzar\u00e1 el LHC permitir\u00e1 multiplicar la recolecci\u00f3n de datos no solo para seguir estudiando las propiedades del Bos\u00f3n de Higgs, sino para observar procesos que hasta ahora eran inaccesibles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despu\u00e9s del descubrimiento del Boson de Higgs, el colisionador hizo posible el descubrimiento de m\u00e1s de 60 part\u00edculas compositivas que hab\u00edan sido predichas por los te\u00f3ricos, entre ellas algunas consideradas de naturaleza \u201cex\u00f3tica\u201d como los tetraquarks y los pentaquarks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DESAF\u00cdOS<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Entre otras cosas se buscar\u00e1 el origen de la materia y la antimateria en el universo, las propiedades de la materia a temperaturas y densidades extremas y part\u00edculas candidatas a materia oscura.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En una conferencia de prensa para recordar la proeza cient\u00edfica ocurrida hace una d\u00e9cada, la directora del CERN, Fabiola Gianotti, dijo que su sue\u00f1o es que en los pr\u00f3ximos a\u00f1os el LHC sea capaz de reconstituir la materia oscura, que representa el 25 % del universo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCon esto nuestra comprensi\u00f3n del universo pasar\u00eda del 5 % actual al 30 %, pero no sabemos si esto ser\u00e1 posible\u201d, admiti\u00f3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">El jefe del Departamento de F\u00edsica Te\u00f3rica del CERN, Gian Guidice, coment\u00f3 que el descubrimiento del Boson de Higgs fue \u201cuna revoluci\u00f3n e hizo que la f\u00edsica de part\u00edculas cambiara m\u00e1s en diez a\u00f1os que en los treinta a\u00f1os anteriores\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHay que entender que el objetivo de la f\u00edsica de part\u00edculas es entender los principios fundamentales de la naturaleza, as\u00ed que el descubrimiento de nuevas part\u00edculas es en si un avance para ganar esos conocimientos\u201d, agreg\u00f3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No obstante, recomend\u00f3 al p\u00fablico y a los pol\u00edticos \u201cno obsesionarse\u201d con el n\u00famero de part\u00edculas que se pueden encontrar, ya que esto es como si se le hubiese preguntado a Charles Darwin \u201ccu\u00e1ntos p\u00e1jaros vio en Gal\u00e1pagos, en lugar de preguntarle qu\u00e9 conocimiento hab\u00eda ganado sobre la evoluci\u00f3n biol\u00f3gica\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEs lo mismo en el LHC. Estamos haciendo esta exploraci\u00f3n no para contar los p\u00e1jaros (las part\u00edculas), sino para entender lo fundamental sobre la evoluci\u00f3n de nuestro universo\u201d, concluy\u00f3.
