Brazil’s operating electrical cogeneration capacity reached 20.11GW in June, which represents 11pc of the electricity matrix.
The Brazilian association of power cogeneration (Cogen) estimates a 558.7MW increase in cogeneration capacity in 2022, with 465.7MW coming from new power plants and 93MW from expansions in installed capacity.
There are 646 cogeneration plants in Brazil, with sugarcane residues representing 60pc of the total installed capacity and 383 plants. Natural gas cogeneration represents another 16pc, with 93 plants, while biogas holds 1.8pc of the installed capacity, at 50 plants. The remaining 22.2pc is shared among sources including black liquor, a paper mill byproduct, and wood chips.
Two-thirds of the cogenerated electricity is already sold on the free market. Cogen suggests tendering biogas-powered cogeneration to supply capacity to the system during dry periods.
