Through Decree 2014 of 2023, signed by the President of the Republic, Gustavo Petro, and the Minister of Mines, Andrés Camacho, the appointment of Orlando Velandia Sepúlveda as the new president of the National Hydrocarbons Agency (ANH) has been confirmed.

The new president of the ANH replaces Clara Guatame, who resigned at the request of the National Government since last May. Since then, several names have been considered for the position, and the chosen one was Velandia Sepulveda, who had previously led the agency in 2016.

Velandia’s Return to the Helm

Velandia’s return marks his second term as head of the ANH, having previously held the position from 2016 to 2018 under the administration of former President Juan Manuel Santos. His reappointment comes as current President Gustavo Petro aims to transition the country away from fossil fuels. Velandia succeeds Clara Guatame, under whose tenure the agency has faced a series of challenges.

Potential Implications for Colombia’s Energy Sector

Velandia’s leadership is expected to bring continuity to the ANH’s operations and Colombia’s broader energy landscape. With his extensive experience in the sector, there is a sense of anticipation that his presidency might introduce new developments and strategies. His role will be pivotal in charting the course for Colombia’s energy future, particularly in the context of the global shift towards renewable energy sources.

ANH’s Crucial Role in Colombia’s Energy Management

The ANH plays a significant role in managing Colombia’s energy resources and promoting investment in the energy sector. Its strategies and policies have a direct impact on the nation’s energy landscape. With Velandia at the helm, the agency is expected to reinforce its commitment to sustainable and responsible energy management, balancing the need for economic growth with environmental considerations.
