Harmon, Norton hold talks on Opposition Leader post: Demerara Waves
Opposition Leader Joseph Harmon and Leader of the People’s National Congress Reform, Aubrey Norton held talks on Monday on the decision by that party that Mr. Norton should take over that constitutional post. Mr. Norton could not be reached for comment as calls to his phones went unanswered, and Mr. Harmon declined to speak about the meeting. Sources close to the talks say that the two politicians had a “good meeting” and nothing so far has changed. The PNCR’s Central Executive Committee has decided that Mr. Norton should enter the National Assembly and become Opposition Leader.
Any attempt to remove Harmon must be made by the APNU+AFC Coalition: Stabroek News (Letter to the Editor) by Dr. Tara Singh
The sudden resignation of Simona Broomes from the PNCR party because of what she claims to be, the absence of “systems, and consultation” within the party, comes at a testing time for the new PNCR leadership. This resignation would not help to alleviate the power struggle within the PNCR for control of the party’s apparatus. Mr. Aubrey Norton was elected the new leader of the PNCR to replace former President, Mr. David Granger, and he wants to replace Mr. Joseph Harmon as the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament.

A motion on the proposed gas-to-shore project in the name of APNU+AFC MP David Patterson has now been placed on the parliamentary notice paper. This was disclosed in a letter sent yesterday by Clerk of the National Assembly, Sherlock Isaacs to Patterson. The correspondence came after Patterson had written a January 8, 2022 letter to Speaker of the National Assembly, Manzoor Nadir complaining that the gas-to-shore motion submitted to Parliament on October 27, 2021 was still to be addressed 74 days on.

Diaspora supports Natural Resource Fund: Guyana Chronicle (Letter to the Editor) by Vishnu Bisram
THE overwhelming majority of Guyanese in the diaspora ( the U.S., the UK, Canada and the Caribbean) with whom I conversed support the recently legislated law on the Natural Resources Fund Act (NRFA). The diaspora is of the view that an important legislation such as the NRF should have enjoyed cross-party and (near) unanimous support. Regrettably, debating of the bill turned into a controversial fight in Parliament. The findings of the sample of Guyanese with whom I spoke suggest that the diaspora is more united in their approach to the bill and the law and what is best for the nation than politicians in Guyana.

Guyana should have a seat at the table in all future oil contracts -Former Suriname Oil Boss: Kaieteur News
The Guyana Government has indicated that it intends to pursue the country’s first oil blocks auction in the third quarter of 2022. When it does this however, there are regional and international stakeholders who strongly recommend that it would be in the country’s interest for the administration to secure the right to participate in the contract governing the oil block being sold. Specifically, former Head of Staatsolie, Suriname’s National Oil Company (NOC), Rudolf Elias says the right to participation would allow Guyana a seat at the table to examine all costs associated with the offshore concession thereby making the auditing process less problematic.
Developing in an environmentally friendly manner: Kaieteur News (Editorial)
Trust politicians to talk a good game. We always knew this, but now confirmation came from an unlikely source (“Pres Ali, Jagdeo directed Stabroek partners to accelerate oil development -Hess Boss says” -KN January 10)… This is why, there is another expression for what “environmentally friendly manner” embodies, according to the likes of Guyana’s leaders, when they smirk over these frauds called public consultations, and in which ExxonMobil itself was only too delighted to come to the party and dance its own jigs. The public consultations were so shallow as not even to qualify to be shams, but outright crimes against the people of this country.

Operator spend in oil and gas sector to surpass US$400 billion this year – WoodMac: OilNOW
Consultancy group Wood Mackenzie says the oil and gas sector will continue to rebound this year, with operator spend expected to surpass US$400 billion and higher prices driving another year of record cash flow. Global supply chain disruption, labour costs and increasing commodity prices will drive up overall costs for operators between 4-10%, depending on the sector. “Operators will maintain focus on capital discipline, efficiency, and cost control,” WoodMac said. “Despite this, we expect operator spend will increase by 9% year-on-year, exceeding US$400 billion in 2022.”
